World Athletics Superstars Girma and Kerley Set for Debuts at New Balance Indoor Grand Prix
Athletics enthusiasts are in for a thrilling spectacle as world record-holder Lamecha Girma and 2022 world 100m champion Fred Kerley are set to make their New Balance Indoor Grand Prix debuts on 4 February. The announcement was made by the organizers of the World Athletics Indoor Tour Gold meeting.
Girma, the Olympic silver medallist and three-time world silver medallist in the steeplechase, will headline the men’s 3000m field. The Ethiopian sensation made headlines last year when he clocked a world indoor record of 7:23.81 for that distance in Lievin, followed by a stunning world steeplechase record of 7:52.11 outdoors.
Meanwhile, the versatile sprinter Kerley, who clinched the world 100m title in 2022, will contest the first 60m race of his career at the prestigious New Balance Indoor Grand Prix. He will face off against the previously announced Noah Lyles, the world 100m and 200m champion.
The women’s 3000m event will be a star-studded affair, with:
- World indoor silver medallist Elle St Pierre of the USA
- European silver medallist Ciara Mageean of Ireland
- World U20 5000m record-holder Medina Eisa of Ethiopia
These top-tier athletes join an impressive lineup that includes Gudaf Tsegay, Grant Holloway, Marco Arop, Jake Wightman, Gabby Thomas, Daniel Roberts, Trey Cunningham, Mariano Garcia, and Bryce Hoppel, all of whom were previously announced for the competition.
