April 16, 2023 – The Spanish Athletics Federation has announced a formidable 22-member squad for the upcoming World Athletics Race Walking Team Championships in Antalya, Turkey, on April 21. This impressive lineup includes double world champions Alvaro Martin and Maria Perez, who are poised to lead their nation’s charge.

The Spanish contingent will field athletes in all five events scheduled for the competition in the Turkish city, with three teams selected for the captivating marathon race walk mixed relay. This event features teams of one male and one female athlete, each completing the marathon distance in four equal legs.

“While the specific pairings are yet to be revealed, the Spanish mixed relay squad boasts an array of world-class talent.”

Alongside Martin and Perez, who clinched gold in the 20km and 35km race walk events at the 2022 World Championships in Budapest, the team includes European 20km race walk fourth-place finisher Alberto Amezcua, 2022 world 35km race walk sixth-place finisher Laura Garcia-Caro, 2015 world 20km race walk champion Miguel Angel Lopez, and world 25km race walk fifth-place finisher Cristina Montesinos.

The top 22 teams to cross the finish line in Antalya will secure automatic qualification for the marathon race walk mixed relay at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. Spain will be eager to deliver a strong performance, as up to five of those first 22 teams can be a second team from the same country, providing the opportunity for Spain to secure two relay spots for the Olympics.

The Spanish men’s 20km team will be led by national champion Paul McGrath and two-time European Championships medallist Diego García Carrera, while the women’s squad features European 35km silver medallist Raquel Gonzalez, who is set to make her fifth appearance at the World Race Walking Team Championships.
