World-Class Athletes Confirmed for Seiko Golden Grand Prix in Tokyo
Tokyo, May 15th – Athletics enthusiasts are eagerly anticipating the upcoming Seiko Golden Grand Prix, a prestigious World Athletics Continental Tour Gold meeting, set to take place in the Japanese capital on May 19th. The event will welcome an impressive lineup of global track and field stars, including notable names from Korea and Japan.
Headlining the men’s events is Korea’s Woo Sanghyeok, the bronze medalist in the high jump at last month’s World Indoor Championships in Glasgow. Woo’s triumph in Belgrade just two years ago has solidified his status as one of the sport’s rising talents, and he will look to maintain his momentum in Tokyo, where he narrowly missed the podium at the 2020 Olympics, finishing fourth.
Woo’s competition will include Australia’s Brandon Starc, the 2018 Commonwealth Games champion and Olympic fifth-place finisher, as well as a talented contingent of Japanese athletes, such as Joel Baden, Tomohiro Shinno, Ryoichi Akamatsu, and Naoto Hasegawa.
In the women’s events, Japan’s Nozomi Tanaka will return to defend her Seiko Golden Grand Prix 1500m title, having clocked an impressive 4:11.56 to win in Yokohama last year. Tanaka, who finished eighth in the 1500m at the Tokyo Olympics, the 5000m at the World Championships, and the mile at the World Road Running Championships, will face off against compatriot Ririka Hironaka in the 5000m.
The women’s 100m hurdles will feature a thrilling showdown between Asuka Terada and Masumi Aoki, who are tied at number two on the Japanese all-time list, as well as Yumi Tanaka. The men’s 110m hurdles will see joint national record-holders Shunsuke Izumiya and Rachid Muratake vying for the top spot.
