Japanese Team Announced for World Race Walking Team Championships 2023 in Antalya

A formidable 20-member Japanese team, headlined by Koki Ikeda and Masatora Kawano, is set to compete at the World Athletics Race Walking Team Championships in Antalya, Turkey. Ikeda, a world and Olympic silver medallist, leads a stellar lineup aiming for success in the marathon race walk mixed relay event.

A 20-strong Japanese team, featuring global medallists Koki Ikeda and Masatora Kawano, has been selected to compete at the World Athletics Race Walking Team Championships in Antalya, Turkey, on 21 April.

Mixed Team Relay

Ikeda and Kawano have been chosen for the marathon race walk mixed relay, which involves teams of one male and one female athlete completing the full distance across four equal legs. The Japanese team for the event includes Olympic and world silver medallist Ikeda, two-time world medallist Kawano, as well as multiple national champion Nanako Fujii, world 35km race walk top-10 finisher Serena Sonoda, Kumiko Okada, and Kazuki Takahashi.

Ikeda previously led Japan to team gold in the men’s 20km race walk at the 2018 World Race Walking Team Championships in Taicang, becoming his nation’s first-ever winner in the event. He later secured individual and team silver medals in Muscat in 2022.

Men’s 20km

Japan’s men’s 20km team in Antalya will feature Ryo Hamanishi, Yuta Koga, 2018 World Race Walking Team Championships bronze medallist Satoshi Maruo, world top-6 finisher Tomohiro Noda, and Kento Yoshikawa.

Women’s 20km

The women’s 20km squad includes Asian Race Walking Championships silver medallist Masumi Fuchise, Yukiko Umeno, and Ayane Yanai, who claimed world U20 10,000m race walk bronze in 2022.
