Global Champions Nominated for Laureus World Sports Awards
Global champions Mondo Duplantis, Shericka Jackson, Faith Kipyegon, Noah Lyles, and Sha’Carri Richardson have been nominated for the prestigious Laureus World Sports Awards’ Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year honors. Athletics is well-represented, with Katarina Johnson-Thompson and Josh Kerr also among the nominees for this year’s 25th edition taking place in Madrid on April 22.
Mondo Duplantis Dominates Pole Vault
Swedish pole vault sensation Duplantis continued his dominance, twice improving his own world record in 2023, first to 6.22m and then to 6.23m. He remained undefeated in outdoor competitions, soaring six meters or higher an impressive 14 times, including his world title defense in Budapest with a 6.10m clearance.
Shericka Jackson’s Sprint Supremacy
Jamaican sprinter Jackson solidified her status as one of the sport’s premier talents, retaining her world 200m title in a championship record of 21.41, the second-fastest time in history. She also earned 100m silver and clinched the Diamond League titles in both sprint events.
Faith Kipyegon’s Historic Achievements
Kenya’s Kipyegon achieved an unprecedented triple, becoming the world 1500m and 5000m champion while setting three world records in the 1500m, mile, and 5000m. She capped her season with a bronze medal in the road mile at the World Athletics Road Running Championships in Riga.
Noah Lyles Secures World Gold Treble
US sprinter Lyles secured a world gold medal treble in Budapest, retaining his 200m title and adding 100m and 4x100m relay golds to his collection. He finished the year as the world leader in both the 100m and 200m.
Sha’Carri Richardson’s Impressive Debut
Making her global debut, Richardson stormed to 100m gold in a world-leading personal best of 10.65, also earning bronze in the 200m and anchoring the victorious US 4x100m relay team.
