World-class Athletes Confirmed for Astana Indoor Meet

In an exciting announcement, world champions Mondo Duplantis and Gudaf Tsegay have been confirmed as the first star athletes set to compete at the ‘Astana Indoor Meet for Amin Tuyakov Prizes’ – the inaugural World Athletics Indoor Tour Gold meeting of 2024, taking place in the Kazakh capital on January 27th.

Both athletes enjoyed remarkable seasons in 2023, with Swedish pole vaulter Duplantis and Ethiopian distance runner Tsegay each earning their second world titles in Budapest, following their previous victories in Oregon the year prior. The pair went on to further cement their dominance, triumphing at the Wanda Diamond League Final and breaking world records in the process – Duplantis vaulting an astounding 6.23m, and Tsegay clocking a blistering 14:00.21 for the 5000m.

Shared Strengths and Accolades

Excelling indoors is a shared strength for these athletic superstars. Duplantis has set an impressive five world records on the indoor stage, while Tsegay has established a world U18 best, a world U20 record, and a senior world record for the indoor 1500m over the course of her illustrious career. They both also secured world indoor titles in 2022.

In Astana next month, Tsegay will take on the mile, an event in which she holds an indoor personal best of 4:16.16 – making her the second-fastest woman in history for the distance, trailing only the world record holder, Genzebe Dibaba (4:13.31).

A Significant Milestone

The 2024 World Athletics Indoor Tour calendar will feature more than 50 meetings, including seven Gold level events. The Astana Indoor Meet will be the first of these prestigious Gold meetings to take place in Asia, marking a significant milestone for the sport.
