Athletics Fans Eagerly Await Javelin Clash at Paavo Nurmi Games

Turku, June 15, 2023 – The Paavo Nurmi Games, a prestigious World Athletics Continental Tour Gold meeting, is set to witness a thrilling javelin showdown on 18 June. Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra will take on world leader Max Dehning and reigning European champion Julian Weber in a highly anticipated event.

Chopra, the Indian sensation, is using this competition as part of his preparations for the upcoming Olympic title defense in Paris this August. The 25-year-old is returning to the Paavo Nurmi Games, where he secured a second-place finish in 2022.

In the previous edition, Chopra hurled the javelin to a distance of 89.30m, falling short of Finland’s Oliver Helander, who set a personal best of 89.83m to emerge victorious. Chopra’s lifetime best stands at an impressive 89.94m, achieved in Stockholm last year.

The Indian javelin star went on to clinch the world title in Budapest in 2022, with a throw of 88.17m. According to his coach Klaus Bartonietz, Chopra has already reached the 90.40m mark in a training camp in Belek, Turkey. “Breaking 90 metres is just a matter of time,” Bartonietz said.

Joining Chopra on the Paavo Nurmi Stadium stage will be Germany’s Max Dehning and Julian Weber. Dehning, the world U20 silver medalist, has made significant strides, throwing a world-leading 90.20m in Halle earlier this year, a remarkable improvement of over 11 meters from his previous best.

Also returning to Turku is Finland’s Oliver Helander, who will be eager to defend his 2022 title. Another Finn, Lassi Etelatalo, completes the impressive lineup of javelin throwers set to enthrall the spectators at the Paavo Nurmi Games.

This year’s Paavo Nurmi Games marks the seventh Continental Tour Gold event of the season, and the clash between these top-tier athletes promises to be a thrilling showcase of athletic prowess and determination.
