Athletics World Embraces Refugee Talent Ahead of Paris 2024
As the world eagerly anticipates the upcoming Paris 2024 Olympic Games, the Olympic Refugee Team has announced a remarkable lineup of seven athletes set to compete in the athletics events. This diverse and resilient squad exemplifies the unwavering spirit of the Olympic movement, offering a beacon of hope for displaced individuals worldwide.
Leading the charge is distance runner Tachlowini Gabriyesos, who made history at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics by securing the highest-ever finish by a refugee athlete at a global championships, placing an impressive 16th in the marathon. Joining him are a host of talented endurance specialists, including 800m specialists Perina Lokure Nakang and Musa Suliman, 5000m runner Jamal Abdelmaji Eisa Mohammed, and middle-distance runner Farida Abaroge, who recently made her debut for the Athlete Refugee Team at the World Cross Country Championships in Belgrade.
The roster also features a trailblazer in the sprinting realm, as Dorian Keletela becomes the first sprinter to represent a refugee team at a global championships, set to compete in the 100m. Additionally, Mohammad Amin Alsalami has been named in the long jump, marking a historic moment as the first field event athlete to represent a refugee team at an international competition.
