Athletics Enthusiasts Eagerly Await Lamecha Girma’s Return to the Scene of His World Indoor 3000m Record
Ethiopian sensation Lamecha Girma is set to make a highly anticipated return to the Arena Stade Couvert in Lievin, France, on February 10th, the same venue where he shattered the world indoor 3000m record last year.
Girma, a multiple medalist in the 3000m steeplechase at both the World Championships and Olympics, etched his name in the history books when he clocked an astonishing time of 7:23.81 at the 2022 World Athletics Indoor Tour Gold meeting, surpassing the previous record of 7:24.90 set by Daniel Komen in 1998. The Ethiopian prodigy went on to further cement his legacy by improving the world 3000m steeplechase record to 7:52.11 in Paris last June.
Prior to his appearance in Lievin, Girma will also compete at the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix in Boston on February 4th, where he will once again take on the 3000m distance, captivating Athletics enthusiasts with his electrifying performances.
Girma’s return to the scene of his world indoor record is the second major announcement for the 2023 Meeting Hauts-de-France Pas-de-Calais, following the confirmation of USA’s Olympic and world pole vault champion Katie Moon as a participant.
The 2023 World Athletics Indoor Tour Gold Season
The 2023 World Athletics Indoor Tour Gold season kicks off on January 27th in Astana, where the fields for the men’s and women’s 60m hurdles have been revealed. Among the notable entries are Britain’s 2018 world indoor champion Andrew Pozzi, as well as Cuba’s Roger Iribarne, Cyprus’ Milan Trajkovic, and Kuwait’s Yaqoub Al-Youha in the men’s event. The women’s race will feature a star-studded lineup, including USA’s two-time world indoor champion and 2019 world 100m hurdles gold medalist Nia Ali, 2022 world 100m hurdles champion Tobi Amusan of Nigeria, and a trio of American hurdlers in Tia Jones, Alaysha Johnson, and Ireland’s Sarah Lavin.
