Glasgow, UK – Last night (February 2), the Leader of Glasgow City Council, Councillor Susan Aitken, was joined by four renowned Scottish champion athletes for the official opening of the MOWA Indoor Athletics Exhibition Glasgow 24. Held in the heart of the city at the St Enoch Centre shopping mall, the latest Museum of World Athletics exhibition is open to the public for a month, closing on the final day of the World Athletics Indoor Championships Glasgow 24 (March 1-3).
The opening ceremony featured welcoming speeches from Councillor Aitken, European Athletics Vice President Cherry Alexander, and the CEO of Commonwealth Games Scotland, Jon Doig, following an introduction by World Athletics Heritage Director Chris Turner.
A distinguished group of Scottish athletes then took the stage, including:
- 2014 European 400m hurdles gold medalist Eilidh Doyle
- 1993 world indoor champions Yvonne Murray-Mooney (3000m) and Tom McKean (800m)
- 1980 Olympic 100m champion Allan Wells
The athletes were interviewed and presented their competition artefacts to the museum’s collection, including Doyle’s 2018 world indoor 400m bronze medal crop top and Murray-Mooney’s winning spikes from the 1993 world indoor championships in Toronto.
“The ceremony also marked the opening of a Team Scotland Exhibition in the St Enoch Centre, celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games. A third exhibition, honoring the life of Paris 1924 Olympic 400m champion Eric Liddell, will open in the coming weeks.”
During the World Indoor Championships, a fan zone in the shopping mall will allow visitors to watch the three-day event, which is sold out.
With over 700 athletes from more than 130 countries competing, the World Athletics Indoor Championships Glasgow 24 will be the most globally significant sporting event ever hosted in Scotland. The MOWA Indoor Athletics Exhibition Glasgow 24 is open daily to the public from 11am to 6pm until the final day of the championships.
