USA Names Formidable Squad for World Athletics Cross Country Championships in Belgrade
The United States has announced a 28-strong team for the upcoming World Athletics Cross Country Championships in Belgrade on March 30th, featuring some of the country’s top distance running talents.
Headlining the senior women’s squad is National cross-country champion Weini Kelati, who secured her spot on the team with a convincing victory at the US Cross Country Championships earlier this year, winning the senior women’s race by a commanding 37-second margin. The 27-year-old, who placed 21st in last year’s World Cross event in Bathurst, will be joined by three-time NCAA steeplechase champion Allie Ostrander.
In the senior men’s division, three-time NCAA steeplechase titleholder Anthony Rotich will lead the US contingent, alongside Emmanuel Bor and Reid Buchanan, both of whom also competed in Bathurst.
Ellie Shea, who was part of the USA’s history-making bronze medal-winning U20 women’s team in 2022, will don the Stars and Stripes once more in Belgrade. Zariel Macchia and Allie Zealand, Shea’s teammates in Bathurst, have also been selected for the U20 women’s race.
Kole Mathison, another member of last year’s U20 men’s bronze medal-winning squad, returns to represent the United States in the U20 category. Meanwhile, Pan-American 5000m champion Kasey Knevelbaard will lead the mixed relay team.
“With a blend of experienced campaigners and rising talents, the US squad is well-positioned to make a strong impression at the World Athletics Cross Country Championships in the Serbian capital.”
