The World Athletics Championships 2023 Garners Excitement as Great Britain Eyes Host Duties

As the global athletics community eagerly awaits the 2023 World Athletics Championships, there’s growing buzz around the possibility of Great Britain hosting the prestigious event in 2029. According to UK Athletics chief Jack Buckner, London is the frontrunner to once again serve as the venue, building on the success of the 2017 World Championships held in the UK.

Speaking to the BBC, Buckner revealed that UK Sport and UK Athletics are currently conducting a feasibility study to explore the possibility of a 2029 bid. “We’d love to have another crack at 2029 and a World Championships,” he said, emphasizing the country’s exceptional track record in hosting major athletic events. “We just do a great job. Everyone talks about the atmosphere at every event we’ve done.”

The 2017 World Championships in London were widely regarded as a transformational moment, building upon the momentum of the 2012 Olympic Games. Buckner noted, “I think London [2017] was transformational and it built off 2012 [Olympic Games]. It was transformational in all sorts of ways.”

While Buckner acknowledged that London is the frontrunner, he stressed that the final decision is still pending the completion of the feasibility study. “We can’t definitely say it’ll be London, but it would be in our mind given the success of it before,” he said.

In the meantime, the athletics world is gearing up for an exciting year, with the 2025 outdoor World Championships set to take place in Tokyo, Japan, followed by the 2027 edition in Beijing, China. This summer’s highlight will be the highly anticipated Paris Olympics, scheduled from July 26 to August 11.
