World Athletics Championships 2023: Exciting Matchup Awaits as Samuele Ceccarelli Faces Jeremiah Azu in Ostrava
As the highly anticipated 2023 World Athletics Championships draw near, the sports world is abuzz with anticipation. One of the highlight events of the upcoming calendar is the Czech Indoor Gala, the second World Athletics Indoor Tour Gold meeting, scheduled to take place in Ostrava on January 30th.
The men’s 60m event is set to be a thrilling showdown between Italy’s European indoor 60m champion Samuele Ceccarelli and Britain’s European 100m bronze medalist Jeremiah Azu. Azu, the defending champion, clocked a time of 6.58 seconds to win the event in Ostrava earlier this year, just 0.02 seconds off his personal best.
Ceccarelli, on the other hand, will be making his debut at the Czech Indoor Gala, having set a personal best of 6.47 seconds to claim the European indoor title in Istanbul this past March. The Italian sprinter is no stranger to the Ostrava track, having finished second in the 100m event at the Golden Spike meeting last June, with a time of 10.15 seconds.
Joining the two speedsters will be home favorites Jan Veleba, the 2022 Czech Indoor Gala champion, and national indoor champion Zdenek Stromsik. Veleba, who is looking forward to the event, expressed his anticipation, saying, “> The Czech Indoor Gala is my favorite meeting. It’s the biggest indoor race in the Czech Republic, and I usually do quite well there, so I’m looking forward to it.”
The men’s 800m event will also feature a captivating matchup, as Britain’s Max Burgin and Elliot Giles go head-to-head. Burgin, a rising star in the middle-distance events, will be making his indoor debut, having set a European U20 record of 1:44.14 at the 2021 Golden Spike meeting and a personal best of 1:43.52 in Turku.
Giles, on the other hand, has experience at the Czech Indoor Gala, having won the 1500m in a meeting record of 3:35.93 in 2022. This time, he will be contesting the 800m, an event in which he holds a personal best of 1:43.63, making him the second-fastest indoor 800m runner of all time.
The Czech athletes Filip Snejdr and Jakub Dudycha, the European U20 champion, will also be part of the 800m field, adding to the depth and excitement of the event.
The women’s 400m will also feature Czech stars Tereza Petrzilkova and Lada Vondrova, who have already been announced for the event.
