Prominent Runners Converge in Serbia for World Athletics Cross Country Championships

Belgrade, Serbia (23 March 2023) – The world’s top distance runners, including reigning champions Jacob Kiplimo and Beatrice Chebet, are set to converge in Serbia for the highly anticipated World Athletics Cross Country Championships Belgrade 24 on 30 March.

Organizers have unveiled the course map, which features a 1887-meter loop with additional start and finish straight sections measuring 270 meters and 320 meters, respectively. The terrain will be predominantly grass, with some pedestrian paths covered in dirt and sand. Runners will also navigate two arch bridges, a hay maze, and a classic cross-country hurdle. Music stations will be positioned at the two turning points of the loop, and traditional Serbian motifs will be displayed along the route.

The event will take place in Friendship Park, one of Belgrade’s largest green spaces. Overlooking the Sava and Danube rivers, the park boasts bike and jogging paths, including the iconic 180-meter “Peace Alley.”

The schedule kicks off at 11 am local time with the women’s U20 race, followed by the men’s U20 event. The senior women’s and men’s races, both contested over 10 kilometers, will conclude the program at 1:30 pm.

“In each race, teams can field up to six athletes, with the top four finishers contributing to the overall team score. The mixed relay, featuring two women and two men per team, will see athletes passing a wristband within the designated takeover zone.”

Substantial prize money is on offer, with the senior individual gold medalists earning $30,000 and the winning teams receiving $20,000. The mixed relay champions will pocket $12,000 per team.
