Adeleke and Diggs Set for Thrilling 300m Clash at Millrose Games
The past two women’s NCAA 400m champions, Rhasidat Adeleke and Talitha Diggs, are set to face off in a thrilling 300m clash at the prestigious Millrose Games in New York on February 11th. Joining them in the event will be Jamaica’s Leah Anderson and Candice McLeod, setting the stage for an action-packed showdown.
Adeleke, the 21-year-old Irish sensation, has already made a remarkable start to the 2024 season. She recently shattered her own national indoor records, clocking 7.15 seconds in the 60m and 22.49 seconds in the 200m, showcasing her blistering speed. The young athlete, who finished fourth in the world 400m final last year in Budapest, has raced the 300m distance only once before, when she set a national record of 36.87 seconds.
Diggs, the athlete who preceded Adeleke as the NCAA 400m champion, will be making her season debut at the World Indoor Tour Gold meeting in Boston this weekend, where she will also compete in the 300m. The rematch in New York will be a chance for Diggs to improve on her personal best of 36.37 seconds, which she set when she won the event at Clemson in 2022.
The lineup is further bolstered by the presence of Jamaican standouts Anderson and McLeod. Anderson, who finished third in last year’s Millrose Games 300m in 36.68 seconds, will be looking to challenge the top contenders. Meanwhile, McLeod, an Olympic and world 4x400m medalist, is set to tackle the distance for the first time.
In the two-mile race, North American mile record-holder Nikki Hiltz, who won the US 1500m title last year and recently clocked 2:34.09 for 1000m, will join the previously announced Alicia Monson. They will face a formidable field that includes USA’s Emily Infeld and Courtney Wayment, Japan’s Nozomi Tanaka, and Ethiopia’s Medina Eisa and Melknat Wudu.
The high jump event will also feature an impressive lineup, with the previously announced Yaroslava Mahuchikh set to compete against 2016 world indoor champion Vashti Cunningham, NCAA champion Charity Griffith, and Asian Games champion Safina Sadullayeva.
The Millrose Games, one of the most prestigious indoor track and field competitions, promises to deliver a thrilling showcase of athletic talent and fierce competition as the world’s top stars converge in New York for this season’s penultimate World Athletics Indoor Tour Gold meeting.
