Prominent British Athletes Opt Out of World Indoor Championships to Focus on Olympics

In a strategic move, several top British athletes, including Dina Asher-Smith and Katarina Johnson-Thompson, have decided to forgo competing in the upcoming World Indoor Championships to concentrate on their preparations for the summer Olympics in Paris. This decision also includes other notable names such as Zharnel Hughes and Keely Hodgkinson, who are prioritizing their Olympic goals over the indoor event.

Despite the absence of these star athletes, the Great Britain and Northern Ireland squad for the World Indoor Championships in Glasgow still boasts an impressive lineup. World 1500m champion Josh Kerr will take the stage in the 3000m event, while fellow Scot Laura Muir, the Tokyo 2020 1500m silver medalist, will also compete in the 3000m. Molly Caudery (pole vault), Morgan Lake (high jump), and Jemma Reekie (800m) are among the other athletes selected for the team.

“We are pleased to be announcing such a strong team and I am looking forward to seeing how the team perform on the world stage,” said Paula Dunn, the Olympic head coach. “We had a thrilling National Championships where athletes secured their places for the team in Scotland, and it was fantastic to see a number of athletes stepping up when it counted.”

The final roster for the World Indoor Championships will be confirmed once World Athletics completes the ranking process later this week, ensuring the selected athletes meet the required criteria set by the governing body.
