Mu, Moraa, and Hodgkinson Set for Prefontaine Classic Showdown

Athing Mu, Mary Moraa, and Keely Hodgkinson, the medalists in the 800m event at the past two World Championships, will face off at the upcoming Prefontaine Classic when the Wanda Diamond League reaches Eugene on May 25.

Mu, the Olympic champion, won the event in Eugene last year when Hayward Field hosted the Wanda Diamond League Final. After finishing third at the World Championships just three months prior, the American athlete gained revenge on home soil and crossed the line in a US record time of 1:54.97.

Hodgkinson, who had previously claimed silver medals at the Olympics in 2021 and the 2022 and 2023 World Championships, finished second on that occasion in a British record of 1:55.19. Moraa, the Kenyan world champion, wound up fourth in the race, having won the title in Budapest with a personal best of 1:56.03.

“This clash at the Prefontaine Classic is the second major middle-distance showdown announced for the event.”

The trio have met on the track just three times in the past, with Mu emerging victorious in two of those encounters.

Last month, it was revealed that Olympic 1500m champion Jakob Ingebrigtsen will take on world champion Josh Kerr and North American record-holder Yared Nuguse in the Bowerman mile at the Prefontaine Classic.
